The future wears blue and white… and it is here to stay

Eight points from four matches, unbeaten against Serbia, Germany and the Netherlands. Greece came through its first international window in League A of the Nations League with a conviction we had not felt for years. Greek football can once again face any opponent with its head held high.

These recent performances give us every reason to feel optimistic about the future. They build confidence among our players and provide a strong foundation for bringing Greece back to the major tournaments.

Confidence matters enormously in football. Competing with teams of this calibre gives real substance to your belief in your own ability. That belief stays with you through the next training session, the next match and the next difficult moment. It is one of the most valuable things we can take from these four games.

The enthusiasm among supporters is fully justified. The national team is giving Greek fans the pleasure of looking forward to the next game again, with the prospect of sharing great moments together. There is real strength in that relationship. Support from the stands lifts the players, and their efforts bring the fans closer in return. We should preserve that connection through the difficulties that will naturally arise along the way.

We have an exceptional generation of footballers, with quality, character and considerable ambition. Players capable of competing on equal terms with established international stars. Greek internationals have shown that they can perform at the highest level. They deserve the same recognition and the same trust.

The depth of this squad is another important strength. Competition is now intense in most positions, and the battle for a place in the starting eleven raises standards for everyone. Every player knows he must keep improving, stay in good shape and make the most of his opportunity. Having an equally capable teammate competing for the same position provides extra motivation and keeps everyone sharp. The whole national team benefits.

That competition becomes even more valuable within the excellent atmosphere in the squad and the dressing room. Passion, the enjoyment of being involved and the desire to succeed together offer genuine advantages on the pitch. Each player competes for his place while also wanting his teammate to do well. This balance between personal ambition and a shared goal gives the team the strength to withstand setbacks and keep progressing.

There is another reason to look ahead with confidence. An equally promising group of young Greek players is following this generation. The progress we see today has the potential to last. To make that happen, we need to give younger players the right coaching, meaningful opportunities and room to mature. Talent develops in a demanding environment, with people who show their belief in it through their decisions.

I firmly believe that Greek players can be the driving force behind the development of Greek football as a whole. Every strong performance for the national team and every success abroad strengthens our reputation as a country that produces high-quality footballers. More clubs turn their attention to the Greek market, better opportunities open up for those who follow, and the work being done here gains greater value.

The investment in the Greek league over recent years can make a substantial contribution to this progress. The arrival of leading players from abroad raises quality and intensifies competition. Greek players have the opportunity to train alongside teammates of a high standard, face demanding opponents and improve every day. A strong domestic league can prepare them better for the challenges of international football.

The essential condition is that Greek players have an active role within it. Trust needs to translate into playing time, responsibility and continuity. They should be assessed by the same standards, rewarded on merit and given room to learn from a mistake. The quality of foreign players and the development of Greek talent can serve the same goal of a stronger, more competitive game in Greece.

The results of these four matches give us solid grounds to raise our expectations. The next step is to turn confidence into consistency and quality into qualification. Returning to a European Championship and a World Cup should be a clear objective, with the ambition to establish a lasting presence at that level.

Personally, I see this national team as a major opportunity for Greek football as a whole. These players give us reasons to believe more deeply in what we can achieve. Our responsibility is to support that potential consistently and give the next generation the conditions it needs to reach even greater heights. Greek players deserve to be at the heart of that effort.
